How to order food in Korean: a simple restaurant dialogue
Ask for a menu, order bibimbap, request water, and ask to pay using beginner Korean phrases with a short restaurant role-play.
Start with 메뉴 주세요 for a menu, name your dish followed by 주세요, and use 계산해 주세요 when asking to pay. Add 감사합니다 to thank the staff.
Get a menu and choose one dish
메뉴 주세요 means “A menu, please.” Once you choose, 비빔밥 주세요 means “Bibimbap, please.” If you are pointing, 이거 주세요 means “This one, please.” Point clearly and confirm the item if there could be confusion. Restaurant ordering procedures vary: some use table service, others use a counter or kiosk.
Make the quantity clear
비빔밥 하나 주세요 asks for one bibimbap. Native numbers 하나 and 둘 are useful in simple orders, though counters vary by item: 물 한 잔 주세요 asks for a glass of water. Practise the whole expression for the item you need instead of applying 한 잔 to every dish.
Ask a short question before ordering
매워요? asks “Is it spicy?” 안 맵게 해 주세요 requests that it be made not spicy. Some dishes cannot be adjusted, so listen to the response rather than treating the request as a guarantee. If you miss the answer, 다시 한번 말해 주세요 asks the person to repeat.
Ask for water and finish the visit
물 주세요 asks for water. 계산해 주세요 means “Please ring this up / I would like to pay.” At some restaurants you pay at the counter, so follow the staff’s directions. 잘 먹었습니다 is a polite way to say you enjoyed or appreciated the meal after eating; 감사합니다 is also a useful thank-you.

Role-play choosing 비빔밥, asking whether it is spicy, and requesting water. Repeat with 김밥. Changing the dish while keeping the request pattern helps you use the phrase flexibly. These short examples are original practice dialogue, not a simulation of every restaurant’s service style.
