Make one reusable request

주세요 asks someone to give you something politely. Put the item before it: 커피 주세요 means “Coffee, please.” To be more specific, add 한 잔, meaning one cup. The full phrase 커피 한 잔 주세요 is a useful order to learn as a unit. In English, please can move around; in this Korean pattern, the request comes after the item and quantity.

Choose hot or cold

따뜻한 거 주세요 asks for a warm or hot one. 차가운 거 주세요 asks for a cold one. The little word 거 stands in for the thing you have been discussing. At cafés, 아이스 아메리카노 주세요 is another common kind of order. The exact menu varies, so pointing to an item and using 주세요 can help when its name is unfamiliar.

Decide where your drink is going

The barista may ask whether you will stay or take your order away. 포장해 주세요 asks for takeaway. 매장에서 마실게요 means “I’ll drink it here.” You do not have to understand every word of a question to recognize the situation, but avoid guessing automatically: asking someone to repeat is always an option.
