Korean batchim: a beginner’s guide to final consonants
Find 받침 at the bottom of Hangul blocks, practise seven ending sounds, and compare 밥 with 밥을 without adding extra vowels.
Batchim is the consonant or consonant cluster written below the vowel in a Korean syllable. Before a pause, final consonants are pronounced in seven sound groups: ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ.
Find the bottom of the block
Compare 바 and 밥. Both begin with ㅂ and contain ㅏ, but 밥 adds a final ㅂ below them. In 한, the final consonant is ㄴ. In 강, it is ㅇ. Read the initial consonant, then the vowel, then the ending. A written syllable can also have two consonant letters in the final position; those combinations need further rules beyond this first lesson.
Close the syllable without an extra vowel
Say 밥 as one syllable. Close your lips for the final sound without adding an “uh” afterward. Similarly, 책 ends with a stopped k-like sound, not an extra spoken syllable. For final ㄴ, ㅁ, ㄹ, and ㅇ, keep the ending connected to the vowel. A final ㅇ has an ng sound; unlike initial ㅇ, it is not silent.
Spelling and the ending sound can differ
Before a pause, different written consonants can share an ending sound. 옷 is pronounced [옫] in isolation: its final ㅅ does not sound like an English s. The seven groups are a useful starting point, but they do not mean every word keeps the same pronunciation in a sentence. The examples below use isolated words so that you can compare their endings.
Listen again when an ending follows
In 밥을, the final ㅂ connects to the vowel of the particle 을, giving [바블]. 옷이 is pronounced [오시]. The spelling stays the same even when the spoken connection changes. Do not apply a simple “move every consonant” rule to all words: clusters, ㅎ, and other sound changes need separate practice. Check the pronunciation of the complete word or phrase in a learner dictionary.

Check your understanding
Try each question before opening its answer.
